In 1996, she graduated from the University of Naples – “Federico II”, summa cum laude, with a degree in Biological Sciences; in 2001, she was awarded a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology by the same University. She worked abroad at the Instituto de Neurociencias CSIC-UMH, in Alicante, Spain (2002–2003; 2005; 2007), and at the Gulbenkian Institute, Oeiras, Portugal (2003–2004). Since 2001, she has been a CNR Researcher at the “Buzzati Traverso” Institute of Genetics and Biophysics (Naples), and since 2006 she has been a Principal Investigator.

Her research interests focus on the study of early embryo development, mainly in mesoderm, neuroectoderm and cardiac formation, using mutant mice and primary cell cultures as model systems. Her work contributed to identifying the key role of the Cripto gene in gastrulation and cardiogenesis. Currently, she is involved in a project studying the mechanisms underlying neural differentation and/or degeneration and the identification of new markers for neurological pathologies.

Since 2011, she has also been interested in Quality and Project Mangement and has attended courses on Quality in the Life Sciences, promoted at the CNR, on the GLP approach (Assobiotech, Milan) and on Leadership (Bocconi University, Milan). In 2014, she became a Quality Management System Auditor (for external Audits).

She is a founding member of the qPMO. In the project, she is in charge of WP1–Knowledge management and is also deeply involved in WP4–Management of multivariable assays.

In 1988, she graduated from the University of Naples – “Federico II”, summa cum laude, with a degree in Biological Sciences. 1989–present: Research Scientist at the Institute of Genetics and Biophysics, CNR (National Research Council); 1999–2000: Visiting Scientist at the University of North Carolina, USA; 2005–present: Research Group Leader for Hemoglobinopathies at IGB-CNR. Memberships in scientific societies: 1993–present: Italian National Order of Biologists; 1998–2005: Society for the Study of Hemoglobinopathies and Thalassemias (SOSTE); 2006–present: Italian Society of Human Genetics (SIGU). She has published more than 30 research articles in international scientific journals.

Since 1989, she has actively participated in a variety of national and international projects. Scientific interests: 1) the molecular basis and epidemiology of alpha and delta thalassemias and hemoglobinopathies in Southern Italy; 2) molecular mechanisms causing disease, analyzing globin mRNA in reticulocytes and erythroid cell cultures in vitro from PBSC (Peripheral Blood Stem Cells); 3) functional analysis of alpha and beta globin mutants; 4) advanced biotechnologies for the genotyping of the alpha-globin genes; 5) database and software for population genetic analysis; 6) in 2000, at University of North Carolina, she carried out a project restoring the production of hemoglobin A, using antisense oligonucleotides, in the in vitro differentiated PBSC of  transfusion dependent patients.

Since 2011, she has been interested in Quality and Project Management principles and methodologies, after attending CNR training courses.

She is a founding member of the qPMO. In the project, she is a member of WP1–Knowledge management.

In 1985, she graduated from the University of Naples – “Federico II”, summa cum laude, with a degree in Biological Sciences; in 1991, she was awarded a Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Genetics by the same University. In 1992, she worked at Emory University in Atlanta, USA, as a Visiting Scientist. In 2007–2008 she worked at the CSIC in Madrid, through the program “Estancias de profesores e investigadores extranjeros de acreditata experiencia en centro de invesigationes espanoles”. Since 1989, she has been a CNR Researcher, and she directs her own research group. Since 2014, she has been a Researcher at the Institute of Biosciences and BioResources at the CNR of Naples.

Since 1989, she has actively participated in a variety of national and international projects, and her major research interests focus on studying gene expression regulation in Drosophila melanogaster. In particular, from her early work on dosage compensation and gene regulation by the steroid hormone ecdysone, she passed to characterizing sex-specific genes in both model and agricultural pest insects. At present, her main scientific interests lie in the study of the molecular processes involved in sperm cell differentiation, as well as functional genomics, using Drosophila as model system.

Since 2011, she has been interested in the application of Quality and Project Management principles to research activity.

She is a founding member of the “qPMO network”. In the “qPMO project”, she is a member of WP1–Knowledge management.

In 1979, she graduated from the University of Naples “Federico II”, summa cum laude, with a degree in Biological Sciences; in 1982, she was awarded a Ph.D. in Food Science and Nutrition by the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Naples – “Federico II”. In 1982, she was a Visiting Scientist at the Joint Research Centre – European Communities, Ispra, Italy. Since 1983, she has been a CNR fellow. She first worked on a national project, “Power Lasers” at the National Cancer Institute - Milan, and since 1984 she has been at Institute of Experimental Endocrinology and Oncology “ G. Salvatore” in Naples, where she obtained a permanent position in 1990 as a Technologist in the Technology for Research Support Area.

Her research interests are focused on: a) Light-matter interactions of biomedical interest; photodynamic therapy (PDT) of tumors; b) Regulation of proliferation and differentiation mechanisms in the male reproductive system; oxidative stress (disease and aging).

Since 2011, she has also been involved in the application of Quality and Project Management principles to research activity, has attended courses “Quality in the Life Sciences” promoted at the Department of Life Sciences of the CNR, and “Introduction to Quality in the laboratory– The GLP approach” promoted at ASSOBIOTECH, Milan. She received a Master’s degree in “Technology Transfer Mediation” from Scientific Park (University of Tor Vergata in Rome), and in 2014 she became a Quality Management System Auditor (for external Audit). Member  of Board of Experts of Innovation and Technolgy Transfer - Campania In.HUB, member of the Foresight Group, CNR, member of the Territorial Committee CNR project “Technology Transfer and Biotechnology for environments, health and nutrition”   BioTTasa RIDITT, since 2005 she is founding member  and Vice Chairman  of GENS-Gene Environments Study- Foundation Onlus.

In 1999, Anna Maria Cirafici graduated in Biology at the University of Naples – “Federico II”. From 1982 to 1990, she had a Research Fellowship at the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, University of Naples – “Federico II”; from 1990 to 2006, she worked as a Research Technician at IEOS, CNR; since 2006, she has worked as a Technologist in the Technology for Research Support Area at IEOS, CNR. In 2003, she was a Visiting Fellow at the National Institutes of Health (Bethesda, USA) in the laboratory of Dr J. Silvio Gutkind.

Her research has focused on studying the mechanisms of TSH on thyroid cells and the role of several oncogenes, such as c-Fos and c-Myc, in the same system. She has also worked on understanding the function of some oncogenic variants of the RET receptor identified in papillary thyroid tumors. At the same time, she has been responsible for laboratory management at the Molecular and Cellular Biology laboratories.

Since 2011, she has also been involved in in the application of Quality and Project Management principles to research activity, and she has attended courses “Quality in the Life Sciences” promoted at the Department of Life Sciences of the CNR, and “Introduction to Quality in the laboratory– The GLP approach” promoted at ASSOBIOTECH, Milan.

She is a founding member of the qPMO. Inside the qPMO project, she in especially involved in WP2–Management of experimental procedures.

In 1979, she graduated from the University of Naples – “Federico II”, summa cum laude, with a degree in Biological Sciences. She won a place in a CNR training course, working first at the Endocrinology Institute at the University of Milan from 1981 to 1982, and then from 1982 to 1990 at the Institute of Endocrinology and Experimental Oncology (IEOS), CNR of Naples. In 1984, she received a Master’s degree in Experimental Endocrinology from the University of Milan. Since 1990, she has worked as a Technologist in Research Support Area at IEOS.

Primary scientific interests: From 1981–1982, her interest focused on the study of androgen hormone metabolism in the rat prostate and epididymis. From 1982–1990, she studied the control mechanisms of cell polarity in epithelia. In 1990, she was a Visiting Scientist at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany, to learn technologies for the “in situ hybridization” of embryonic tissues. From 1990–2000, she studied the activation of thyroid-specific genes in undifferentiated rat thyroid cells line. From 2000–2009, she worked on projects aimed at understanding the mechanisms of transcriptional regulation of thyroid-specific gene expression. Currently, she is involved in studying the transduction of signals responsible for the acquisition and maintenance of cell polarity in thyroid epithelial cells.

Since 2011, she has also been interested in the application of Quality and Project Management principles to research activity and has attended courses on Quality in the Life Sciences promoted at the CNR and on the GLP approach (Assobiotech, Milan).

She is a founding member of the qPMO. Within the project, she is a member of WP2–Management of experimental procedures.

In 1992, she graduated from the University of Palermo, summa cum laude, with a degree in Biological Sciences; in 2001, she was awarded a Ph.D. in Cell Biology by the same University. She worked as a post-doctoral Research Associate (1998–2001) and Visiting Scientist (1–2 months/year, 2001–2004) at the Department of Genetics, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, USA. Since 2001, she has been a permanent CNR Researcher at the “Alberto Monroy” Institute of Biomedicine and Molecular Immunology at the CNR of Palermo, leading the “Cellular Dynamics Lab”. Since 2009, she has also been involved in science dissemination activities for school teachers and students (CNR, Region of Sicily, MIUR).

Her present research activities are focused on the interplay between the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway and membrane trafficking during cell differentiation and transformation. Her involvement in the generation and analysis of Ozz and Alix mouse models has enabled her to study in depth the role of these two proteins on cell and tissue homeostasis. The research activity led to the publication of several scientific papers in international peer-reviewed journals, to the granting of an international patent, to the funding of international and national projects (Flagship Project Nanomax, MIUR, Italy; FaReBio di Qualità Project, Min. of Economics and Finance, Italy; US National Institutes of Health, NIH Grant).

Her current studies regard: using animal and cellular models for studying Alix in cytoskeleton and membrane remodeling; exosome biogenesis; Total Quality System in Life Sciences research; analysis of Epithelial-Mesenchymal Transition (EMT) in sea urchin embryo and metastatic cancer cells: screening of bioactive molecules

Since 2011, she has also been interested in the application of Quality and Project Management principles to research activity and attended courses on Quality in the Life Sciences promoted at the CNR. Since 2013, she has been the Quality Manager of the CNR research laboratory MarLab-IBIM, Palermo.

She is a founding member of the qPMO. In the project, she coordinates WP3–Management of a research laboratory.

After studying classics, taking an MSc in Electronic Engineering and attaining professional qualification, she worked with researchers at the C. Mondino Department of Neurology and the Institute of Food Science at the University of Pavia on the definition of mathematical models and data processing. She worked at ST Microelectronics from 1984–1988 and at Magneti Marelli from 1989–2003, reaching the role of Quality Manager of the Business Systems Unit (Powertrain Division). Since November 2003 (and as owner of “Valore Qualità” since 2009), she has been a self-employed professional consultant for Organization and Management Systems, working in academia, manufacturing, scientific research (VIP and OMICS Projects funded by the Region of Lombardy; Italian National Research Council), and the service industry. She is an Adjunct Professor in the Degree Course in Molecular and Cellular Medical Biotechnology, and she has taught in the Degree Course in Medical and Pharmaceutical Biotechnology (Vita-Salute San Raffaele University), as well as teaching postgraduate courses (PON BioForIU, PON Biosciences and Health, IVASCOMAR Project/Alisei Cluster) and management training. She is a member of the RQA (Research Quality Association) and the Study Group “Biological medical products and medicines for advanced therapies” at the AFI (Association of Pharmaceutical Industry).

She has been involved in the qPMO project up to 2015, as external consultant, supporting the exploration and implementation of Quality and Project Management principles, methodologies and tools.

Short CV and Research Activity

Romeo Prezioso is a technician in the computer science field. Since 2001 he has been working actively with Dr. Lacerra at IGB-CNR, as member of her laboratory, on projects aimed to molecular epidemiology of Thalassemia and Hemoglobinopathies in Southern Italy. Mr. Prezioso has excellent skills in database creation, management and data entry. In particular, he built the data base “Talassemia” and contributed to the development of the software/database “Genowin”, both designed to contain and elaborate the key bits on information to work in a laboratory of molecular epidemiology. Mr. Prezioso is co-author of nine paper on ISI journal, of nine communication to National or International Conferences and he is acknowledged in twelve papers on ISI journal.

Since 2011, he has been interested in Quality and Project Management principles and methodologies, after attending CNR training courses.

From 2013 to 2015 he collaborated on WP1–Knowledge management and he was charged in the management of the web platform quality4lab.igb.cnr.it developed for cataloging, sharing and consultation of the scientific resources available within the National Research Council (CNR), focusing on Life Sciences. In particular, he implemented and customized the graphic layout, tested the beta version, worked on the data entry and on the drawing of the data entry guideline.
